Fisherman’s Birthday Goes Into High Gear Preparation

Organizers of this year’s Fisherman’s Birthday celebrations are deep into preparations for the Monday June 29th event.

Head of the fisheries department, Junior McDonald says that this year the major exercise of the celebration will be held in the fishing community of Windward. McDonald said that already a high level of support and commitment is shown by the fishermen across Carriacou and Petite Martinique for the celebrations.  He pointed out that the day’s activities will begin with the blessings of the boats followed by the traditional cooking and food sharing to the expected mammoth crowd.

The head of the fisheries department, added that the idea to stage one celebration on an annual rotational basis is a brilliant idea as it allows all fishermen to display a better form of camaraderie among themselves. Further underscoring the importance of the event, McDonald, added that the menu will be dominated by seafood as people are afforded a greater opportunity to recognise the importance of fishermen and women to the society and the nation’s economy.  The celebration is expected to be declared open by Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Hon Elvin Nimrod.

Last Year’s celebrations were held at the Paradise beach in L’Esterre.  A couple years ago there was a decision to allow each fishing community to stage their respective fisherman’s birthday celebrations.  However, this proved unsuccessful hence the reason for the reinstatement of one major celebration annually.
