Shakespeare Mas, The Hinge of The 2018 Carnival Door

The Carriacou Carnival Committee has been applauded for fully embracing the unique Shakespeare Mas as the hinge on which the door of the festival would swing in 2018. 

In declaring the festival officially open, Senator Norland Cox said that while the committee must be commended for selecting this aspect of the culture as the cornerstone of next year’s festival, he believes that the highlighting of the mas should not only be for the 2018 festival but for every future staging of the annual pre-Lenten festival.

Storm Surge Battered West Coast

Although Hurricane Maria was hundreds of miles away from Carriacou when it dealt its destructive blow to the Northern Caribbean, its negative effects were also felt here.

Several huge waves bruised and battered parts of the western coastline.  One of the areas, which show signs of the severe pounding of the waves, is the popular Mermaid beach Hotel.

Poor Drainage Leads To Flooding

A poor drainage system may have been the main reason for a series of flooding across the island last week Wednesday, as an upper-level trough swept across the Windward Islands on Wednesday.

The rain, which began about 5:00 am, saw several homeowners in low-lying areas having to quickly bail out and mop up water from their homes.  Some schools were forced to close their doors while others had to abandon classes from early in the morning. The rain washed large amounts of debris and mud into the roadways in several parts of the island.
