Sour Serpent Is King Again

Veteran calypsonian Sean Niles AKA “Sour Serpent” has been crowned Grenada’s Independence Calypso King for the second consecutive year.

No stranger to the calypso stage, Niles retained his title with an impressive performance in front of a mediocre crowd, which  showed up to witness last Sunday’s Independence Calypso finals at the Sauteurs Bus Terminus in St Patrick’s.

His selection “No Waysian” captivated the small but lively crowd, not only with its humor but its strong embedded message that sought to assure outsiders, that despite the challenges, Grenada is still the best place to have fun and live an enjoyable life.

At the end of his delivery, Niles a former schoolteacher, won the nod of the judges amassing a total of 256 points, three points, ahead of his closest rival Kelly Clyne aka “ Rootsman Kelly’ who finished in second position with 253 points his selection “Virgin Country.”

Third position went to Edison Francis aka “Teacher Eddy” his selection “Lets Build a Nation “ amassed a total of 237 points.

Position four was captured by another veteran in the business Randy “Whiteman” Campbell, his selection “ Grenada to the World” scored 206 points, Position five went to Filandi Jeffery aka “Stunna” son of former calypso monarch, Findley Jeffery “Scholar” his selection  “Moving On” scored 202 points.

Other finishers were position six, Winston Glasgow “African Teller” position seven went to Cheryl Antoine “ Lady Cheryl,” position eight Alister Hagley  “ Jah Angel,” position nine Oneal  “Gunn” Findley and finishing at the cellar was newcomer Denson Lewis.
