2017 Billfish Tournament Launched

2017 Billfish Tournament Launched

One of the islands most successful and internationally acclaimed fishing competitions has been launched. Though carded for January 2017, the early launch is to facilitate registration and other activities in the build up to the tournament.

Two of the sponsors of the 2017 billfish tournament, in keeping with their obligations, made financial contributions to the organisers.

Republic Bank presented a cheque valued at  $20,000.00 to chairman of the organizing committee Mr. Richard Mc Intyre.

This is the forty-eight version of this premiere, internationally acclaimed tournament that is carded for January 21st - 25th 2017 with more than fifty boats anticipated to participate.

The tournament is estimated to generate close to two million dollars each year. Mc Intyre said that he is pleased with the many successes of the tournament over the years, noting that as a result, his company remains committed to ensuring the longevity of the sport and the tournament.

“When I think about the success of the tournament I think primarily about where we came from, which was a tournament that had killed every fish caught and has since moved to conservation, which he said is why we are able to celebrate forty- eight years”, he explained.

By conservation he means that all the tournament species of fish caught are measured, weighed and released.

The chairman stated that the boats participating in the tournament come from across the region and even as far away as North America.

Budget Marine Grenada is another sponsor of the tournament and Country Manager Nicholas George has reaffirmed his company’s continuous commitment towards contributing to a successful staging of the tournament. He noted that his company has just signed on until 2019 and will be part of the 50th anniversary.

George said that the tournament doesn’t have to do with Budget Marine alone but it’s also a message to the corporate entities in Grenada; letting them know that when efforts and support are placed in a worthy cause, the event as well as the corporate entity benefits greatly.

He said that Budget Marine Grenada has been a part of the event since 2011 and is very proud.

The 2017 billfish tournament would be broadcasted live via Facebook and other social media sites to a global audience.

Grenada’s water is home to an abundance of sport fishing species added to the fantastic scenery that keeps attracting anglers and boats from across the region.
